Other things I'm building
The inspection business is the day job. These are the rest — two free local directories and an apparel brand that exists mostly because it makes me laugh.
SoKY Local · sokylocal.com
A local directory that costs nobody anything.
Finding a decent contractor in South Central Kentucky is harder than it ought to be. The national directories charge businesses to be found and sometimes charge homeowners to look, and the results tend to favour whoever paid the most that month. SoKY Local is the opposite of that: free to list, free to search, no fee to appear, no fee to be contacted.
It covers Bowling Green and the surrounding counties — Glasgow, Brownsville, Leitchfield, Franklin and the towns between. Any service for hire belongs on it: contractors, inspectors, real estate agents, restaurants, banks, caterers, photographers, web designers, musicians taking bookings. Businesses can submit a website link and have the listing filled in automatically, then claim it. Reviews work the way people expect, and a business can link its Google profile so those reviews show alongside.
The disclosure, since it matters: Peirson Home Inspections holds a permanent owner spot on the site. That is the only return I take out of it. Listings are not ordered to favour my business, reviews are not filtered, and the handful of paid sponsor placements are labelled as sponsors everywhere they appear. A directory that quietly ranks its owner first is worthless to everyone, including its owner.
Lake Erie Local · lakeerielocal.com
The same idea, run back up north.
I spent most of my life in Pennsylvania before Kentucky, and the tri-state area around Lake Erie has the same problem South Central Kentucky does. Lake Erie Local is SoKY Local rebuilt for Erie, Meadville and Warren in Pennsylvania, Jamestown in New York, and Ashtabula in Ohio — same model, same promise, free on both sides.
Whatever gets built on one site gets ported to the other, so improvements land in both places. If you are up that way, or you know somebody running a business up there, it costs nothing to be on it.
Tactical Hotdog Co · tacticalhotdogcompany.com
And then there's this guy.
Tactical Hotdog Co is an apparel brand I started for the humour of it, built around a mascot named Johnny. It has nothing to do with home inspections, and that is precisely the point — after a day in a crawlspace, drawing a hot dog in a plate carrier is a reasonable way to spend an evening.
The nickname came from the Department of Corrections, where fourteen years and nine on the hostage rescue team earned me worse things to be called than Johnny Hotdog. The brand grew out of that. This particular version of him came about when somebody pointed out that Johnny had never been kitted out for my actual job.
There is a shop, a mascot that turns up uninvited, and a hidden mini-game on the site for anyone who goes looking. If you came here for a home inspection, none of this is relevant to you, and it is down here at the bottom of the site for exactly that reason.
